The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is committed to collaborating with the Fiji Police to enhance safety in Nadi. This initiative follows a call from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka for increased security in the area. Dr. Ram Raju, the NCCI president, emphasized that a recent incident involving foreign airline personnel has highlighted the need for more proactive measures to protect the community.
Dr. Raju pointed out that they have been engaging in regular discussions with senior officials from the Nadi and Namaka Police Stations, and he views the recent occurrence as an urgent signal to bolster preventive actions. He noted that such incidents have not been frequent, calling this case an isolated event, but underscored the importance of ensuring that it does not recur, as it could damage the reputation of Nadi as a leading tourism destination in the South Pacific.
NCCI members and other relevant stakeholders are scheduled to meet with police officials in the upcoming week. During prior conversations with the officer in charge of Nadi, Dr. Raju learned about serious manpower shortages within the police force, with only two vehicles available at the Nadi Police Station. He is advocating for the government to adequately supply the police force with essential resources, citing Nadi’s considerable contribution to national development.
Overall, this proactive partnership between the NCCI and the police aims to improve security measures and reinforce the safety of residents and tourists alike, showcasing a strong community commitment to maintaining Nadi’s status as a safe and welcoming location.
In a broader context, enhanced security measures not only protect individuals but also foster a sense of community and stability, which in turn can positively impact tourism and local businesses. It’s a hopeful development for both residents and visitors to the region.
