Just five months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its replacement, the RFNS Timo, experienced damages during a docking incident at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The vessel was being imported from Australia as a gift from the Australian government following the decommissioning of the RFNS Puamau, which sustained significant damages when it hit a reef in June.

The RFNS Timo incurred minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline during med-mooring operations on Thursday. Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, stated that the incident was caused by a combination of gusty winds and limited docking space, exacerbated by the presence of commercial vessels nearby. Moreover, there are concerns regarding crew conduct during the incident, with reports suggesting that some crew members may have been intoxicated.

To ensure accountability, those involved in unprofessional conduct have been detained, and a formal investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident. Within 24 hours of the incident, navy engineers began assessing the damage and commenced repairs, which are nearing completion. This will allow the RFNS Timo to quickly return to operational status.

Commodore Tawake emphasized the need for increasing operational protocols and crew training to prevent future incidents and stressed that the integrity of the vessel remains intact and fully operational. He also expressed gratitude towards the Australian Government for their ongoing support under the Vuvale Partnership.

The incident serves as a crucial reminder of the necessity for continuous improvement in maritime training and professionalism, highlighting the complexity of naval operations. Despite challenges, the commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring the safety of operations remains a priority.

This situation demonstrates both the importance of accountability in military operations and the collaborative support that exists between nations, which fosters resilience and reliability even in the face of setbacks.
