Just a few months after the RFNS Puamau ran aground in the Fulaga Passage, its successor, the RFNS Timo, has encountered difficulties. The new vessel experienced minor damage while docking at the Walu Bay Navy Pier, where sailors from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division were bringing it in from Australia.
The RFNS Timo is another thoughtful gesture from the Australian government, meant to replace the $18 million RFNS Puamau that was decommissioned after hitting a reef in June. During the recent docking operation, the RFNS Timo sustained slight damage above the waterline on its port-side stern due to a challenging combination of strong winds and limited docking space made even tighter by nearby commercial vessels.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, raised concerns regarding the potential for unprofessional behavior among the crew, with reports suggesting that some were allegedly intoxicated during the incident. “We are fully committed to accountability, and any individuals found to have engaged in inappropriate behavior will be dealt with as necessary,” he affirmed, noting that an investigation is currently ongoing to better understand the circumstances of the docking mishap.
In a quick response, navy engineers conducted a full assessment within 24 hours and have nearly completed repairs, ensuring that RFNS Timo can return to operational status shortly. Commodore Tawake emphasized that the navy is revising operational protocols and enhancing crew training to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He also expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the Australian Government, part of the Vuvale Partnership. While acknowledging the complexities of maritime operations and the necessary focus on professionalism and discipline, he reassured that the RFNS Timo’s structural integrity remains intact.
In summary, while setbacks have occurred, the swift actions taken by the naval officials demonstrate a commitment to improvement and operational readiness. This incident, although unfortunate, presents an opportunity for growth and enhancing protocols within the navy.
Looking ahead, the proactive measures being implemented by the Republic of Fiji Navy can serve as a foundation for safer and more efficient maritime operations in the future.
