Navo: The Heartbeat of Rewa’s Waterway

Being a boat master entails more than just providing transportation; for Napolioni Raqitawa, known as Navo, it is a commitment to the community. The Nukutubu villager from Rewa has spent decades dedicated to ferrying families and passengers to the Nasilai landing along Wainibokasi Road.

Despite facing challenges in his education after attending Rewa Primary School, Navo was resolute in his pursuit of success. With support from the Rewa Water Taxi Association, he and his fellow boat operators received the necessary licenses to work legally as water taxi operators.

Navo’s day begins early at around 3:30 am, as he facilitates the morning commute for school children and workers to Nasali landing, ensuring they catch the 5:30 am bus to Nausori and Suva. After the morning rush, he makes several trips to and from Nasali before returning home for breakfast and attending to household chores and livestock.

In the lull after breakfast, Navo takes a brief nap to recharge before returning to his boat, where he continues to transport passengers across the Rewa River until approximately 9:30 pm, weather permitting.

When discussing how he navigates the waters safely, especially under challenging conditions, Navo credits the rigorous training and certification provided by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF). The training equips boat handlers with essential boating skills, critical for safely transporting passengers in the area.

Navo emphasizes the importance of safety during inclement weather, stating that his experience has honed his ability to guide his boat adeptly on the river. He also maintains a careful load balance to ensure safety for all passengers and goods.

Compassionate in his approach, Navo assists those who need to travel but lack the fare. He allows passengers to pay later, trusting that they will honor their commitments.

Having established his career on the Rewa River over two decades ago, Navo remains dedicated to his work, relishing the joy of helping countless students and villagers daily. The camaraderie he shares with fellow boat masters adds to the enjoyment of his job, as he believes humor and teamwork enhance their performance and well-being.

Navo is committed to serving the public’s interests and advocates for kindness and understanding within the community. He uses his small business not only to support his family but also to promote values of love and compassion.

Through Navo’s exemplary dedication and positive spirit, he serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that a life devoted to helping others can truly make the world a better place.
