World Maritime Day 2024 will be observed tomorrow with the theme “Navigating the future: safety first!” This theme highlights the efforts of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to enhance maritime safety and security, while also protecting the marine environment. The IMO is working to ensure that its regulatory processes can effectively anticipate the rapid advancements in technology and innovation.
The IMO states that this theme will enable a global focus on the implications for safety regulations stemming from new technologies and the adoption of alternative fuels. This includes efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships, as the organization aims to maintain and potentially improve the safety and efficiency of shipping, ensuring the seamless operation of international maritime trade.
As the United Nations agency responsible for global shipping, the IMO has prioritized safety since its establishment in 1948. The year 2024 also marks the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the 1974 Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention, a fundamental treaty for maritime safety.
“We can be proud of the critical role this convention has played in establishing international safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation, helping to prevent maritime disasters and protect lives,” said IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez in a video message for World Maritime Day. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts to keep up with the ongoing transformations in shipping.
In Fiji, to celebrate World Maritime Day 2024, the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has launched an essay contest for high school students in years 9 to 13. The winners of this competition will be revealed during the celebrations in Suva on Friday.
