Naviavia Village Scores Game-Changing Internet Upgrade!

Naviavia Village Takes a Giant Leap with Starlink: A New Era of Connectivity Awaits!

Residents of Naviavia village on Vanua Levu can look forward to improved communication capabilities, particularly during cyclone season, following the installation of Starlink satellite internet and a new telephone system. The equipment, delivered on March 1, 2025, was presented by Assistant Minister for Information Hon. Aliki Bia as part of a pioneering pilot program.

The project, administered by Network Sharks—an authorized Starlink dealer—includes the setup of a satellite dish, a telephone, and two Wi-Fi access points that function on a voucher-based system for internet usage. District Advisory Councillor Mr. Sade Marika emphasized the project’s importance, especially during emergencies, stating, “This is a really big help for us here in Naviavia, as we are not able to communicate with those around us, especially during bad weather.”

Mr. Marika also pointed out that enhanced internet access will not only support emergency communications but will also keep the village informed about government aid programs and development opportunities.

The initiative is part of a broader pilot program aimed at assessing the viability of satellite internet services in remote locations, potentially paving the way for similar undertakings across Fiji. This development aligns with the Fijian government’s commitment to improving connectivity throughout the nation. Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica mentioned that other areas are being designated for Starlink services as well.

Such projects play a crucial role in closing the digital divide, ensuring that remote communities can access essential communications and information. As more villages gain reliable internet access, the potential for socioeconomic advancement and enhanced resilience against natural disasters increases, nurturing a hopeful future for these communities.
