The Navala Youth sevens rugby team is preparing to compete in the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Despite encountering numerous obstacles during their preparations, the team maintains a positive outlook as they aim to make their mark.
Team official Ilairo Belo highlighted the dedication and resourcefulness of the players, who have independently organized fundraising efforts to cover their transportation and accommodation costs for the three-day event. They have faced challenges including bad weather and limited training facilities, often improvising with makeshift equipment like tires to maintain their fitness. This resilience demonstrates the team’s unwavering commitment to their goal.
Belo noted that the players have been actively seeking odd jobs, such as farm work, to support their expenses for the tournament. Recent flooding has complicated their preparations, impacting both their usual training grounds and local infrastructure, including the bridge connecting their village to the Ba River.
This marks the Navala Youth team’s second entry into the Coral Coast 7s, and they are determined to reach the playoffs this year. Belo emphasized the need for mental focus and effective communication on the field, as they will be up against strong local and international contenders. He encourages players to avoid negative influences and instead focus on their talent, considering the tournament as a potential springboard to professional rugby opportunities.
The strong bond among the players, many of whom are blood relatives from the same village, enhances their teamwork and camaraderie. Belo is actively calling on the village of Navala Ba to come out and support the team, highlighting the importance of community backing as they represent their village.
The Navala Youth team’s journey epitomizes resilience and determination, showcasing how sports can unite a community while fostering personal growth and aspirations. With unity, hard work, and the support of their village, the team aims to create a hopeful narrative as they head into the tournament, embodying the transformative power of sports.
