Just five months after the RFNS Puamau experienced a grounding incident in the Fulaga Passage, its successor, the RFNS Timo, has encountered damage from a docking mishap at the Walu Bay Navy Pier. The Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division was responsible for bringing the vessel from Australia.
The RFNS Timo, valued at $18 million, was gifted by the Australian government to replace the RFNS Puamau, which ran aground on a reef in Lau waters in June. During berthing operations on Thursday, the new ship sustained minor damage to its port-side stern above the waterline.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Humphrey Tawake, attributed the incident to a combination of gusty winds and a limited docking space exacerbated by the presence of commercial vessels. He also did not rule out the possibility of unprofessional conduct contributing to the event.
Reports suggest that several crew members were allegedly intoxicated during the docking mishap. In response to the incident, Commodore Tawake stated that individuals suspected of unprofessional conduct have been detained while a formal investigation is underway to uncover all details and rectify any deficiencies.
Within 24 hours of the incident, navy engineers conducted a comprehensive assessment and initiated repairs, which are now nearly finished. The RFNS Timo is on track to regain full operational capability soon. The Navy is also reviewing operational protocols and crew training to enhance procedures and prevent future occurrences.
Despite these challenges, Commodore Tawake assured that the structural integrity of the vessel remains intact and it is fully operational. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support of the Australian Government through the Vuvale Partnership, emphasizing the importance of continuous improvement in training and professionalism within maritime operations.
This incident serves as a learning opportunity, reinforcing the value of accountability and improvement in naval practices. As the RFNS Timo prepares to return to duty, it symbolizes resilience and a commitment to excellence in the face of adversity.
