Managing a smoothie bar on one of the busy streets of Nausori Town was not initially part of 26-year-old Marika Senilagakali’s plan for the future.
Marika anticipated the excitement of starting a business but was also aware that he would encounter numerous challenges as an entrepreneur. Despite lacking extensive business experience, the Lauan native remained undeterred.
In partnership with shop owner Nacanieli Rakotuinasigana, they were motivated to establish “Pacific Haven.” This newly launched bar is situated next to ‘The Pork Shop,’ which is also owned by Mr. Rakotuinasigana, who currently lives abroad.
Pacific Haven offers a variety of flavors, including coconut, pineapple, celery, ginger, turmeric, banana, and watermelon papaya smoothies, all made from fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables.
Marika expressed that starting a smoothie business in Nausori was a smart decision, given the town’s location at the intersection of three provinces: Tailevu, Naitasiri, and Rewa. He identified an opportunity to provide the community with nutritious and tasty beverages, highlighting the use of fresh ingredients and innovative flavors.
“Launching a fruit juice and smoothie business alongside the Pork Shop was driven by the desire to diversify our offerings and cater to a wider range of customer preferences,” Marika explained. “While the Pork Shop focuses on high-quality meat, I noticed a rising demand for healthier, refreshing options.”
He noted that having a central and accessible location in Nausori was a strategic choice, facilitating the procurement of local, high-quality ingredients. “Being close to local farmers and markets allows us to provide the freshest products, reinforcing our commitment to quality and sustainability. This not only benefits local farmers but ensures that our ingredients are at their freshest and most flavorful.”
Marika emphasized that successfully managing the creative and business elements of a smoothie shop requires strategic planning, effective communication, and a focus on both innovation and efficiency.
Just a week before opening, Marika reported that business has been thriving, with considerable interest in his tropical fruit smoothie venture. “Our customers have given us positive feedback, which has been crucial for shaping and enhancing our business. Common feedback includes requests for quality and freshness, unique flavors and customization, health-conscious options, and excellent customer service.”
Their goal is to create a strong brand recognized for its quality, health focus, and outstanding customer service. Marika shared that starting a business is both thrilling and demanding, as the commercial landscape is constantly changing. “It’s essential to choose a business that resonates with your interests and passions.”
The young entrepreneur believes that to run a successful business, nurturing a passion for your work and surrounding yourself with supportive mentors, advisors, and peers is crucial. “Stay inquisitive, seek out new knowledge, and be willing to adapt. Ongoing learning and self-improvement will ensure you stay ahead.”
He also advised developing a comprehensive business plan that outlines your vision, goals, target market, budget, and strategies. “This plan will act as a roadmap and help you maintain focus on your objectives.”
