A clean-up event along Koronivia Road in Nausori led to the collection of 596 kilograms of waste and recyclable materials. The initiative was organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and local residents. The collected waste comprised 500 kilograms of general trash, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans.
Amitesh Deo, the founder of PRF, underscored the significance of shared responsibility in waste management. He stated, “The amount of waste we collected in just two hours highlights the urgent need for everyone to move away from the throwaway culture and take responsibility for their waste. We must all commit to keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations.”
The clean-up revealed a considerable amount of household waste and recyclables, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and boxes filled with unused items. Many of these discarded items were blocking drains after recent grass-cutting activities by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside.
Mr. Deo expressed disappointment that their team could not collect all the refuse in the area, as they faced difficulties accessing the muddy drains due to the potential hazards posed by sharp or harmful objects that could cause injuries.
