In late August, the serene environment of the gravelly road at palm-fringed Natuvu was filled with the sounds of chatter as people gathered from various regions, including Cakaudrove, Macuata, Bua, and even Viti Levu, seeking healing and restoration of their vision. For nearly two decades, The Mission at Natuvu Creek has become a beacon for individuals from diverse backgrounds and ages, providing an array of medical services and health education on a 750-acre estate surrounded by stunning landscapes.
This non-denominational, faith-based nonprofit organization attracts volunteers from different faiths, all dedicated to selfless service. Medical professionals and their support teams work diligently to provide care, bringing joy and relief to patients while also gaining invaluable cultural experiences in Fiji. Annually, up to 20 medical teams contribute time and expertise, enhancing healthcare access for local Fijians.
California optometrist Dr. Randy Edwards shared his thoughts on his first visit to Fiji, expressing the rewarding nature of helping others. He highlighted the graciousness and warmth of the Fijian people. Ophthalmologist Dr. Peter Andrews, who specializes in eye surgeries, praised the clinic’s establishment, describing it as an “oasis,” noting that it has earned the trust of the local community.
The mission’s founder, Dr. Marta Tooma, emphasized the spiritual aspect of the care provided, seeking to give patients not only physical healing but also a sense of spiritual connection. Mission chaplain Petero Siwatibau plays a vital role in offering spiritual support to the staff and patients alike.
Since its inception, many miraculous stories have emerged from Natuvu, where individuals have regained their sight and regained the ability to perform daily activities such as reading and sewing. One poignant case involved a local woman receiving a corneal transplant, which transformed her life and allowed her to express gratitude through a handmade gift.
Local residents have also benefited from the free medical services. Nasiban Bibi from Labasa was excited about her recent cataract surgery, hoping for clearer vision. Filomena Tui from Buca Village praised the world-class care at Natuvu, expressing a desire to regain her sight to continue her crafts and read the Bible. Another local, Ray Kiran, highlighted her urgent need for treatment to maintain her independence.
At Natuvu, all individuals are treated with dignity, creating a supportive atmosphere for both staff and patients. Chef Vika Vakaotia emphasized the joy of nourishing the team through healthy meals, while local vendors found opportunities to provide food to visitors, supporting their families in the process.

With a limited number of specialists in the area, the mission fills a crucial gap in healthcare delivery. Its dedicated volunteers conduct a variety of medical services, including surgeries and health education, with ongoing projects like the dental clinic to further enhance community health.
