In late August, the serene environment of Natuvu, known for its palm trees and tranquil surroundings, was enlivened by the arrival of visitors from across Cakaudrove and even further afield, including neighbouring Macuata and Bua, as well as a few travelers from Viti Levu. These individuals gathered in hopes of healing and revitalizing their health, particularly aiming to restore their vision. For nearly two decades, The Mission at Natuvu Creek has become a haven for people from various backgrounds seeking medical assistance. Nestled on a sprawling 750-acre estate that features an extinct volcano, dense tropical and bamboo forests, and the alluring shores of Buca Bay, the mission promotes health and wellness for Fiji’s rural communities.
The Mission at Natuvu Creek is a non-denominational, faith-based nonprofit organization that welcomes volunteers from diverse religious backgrounds, all sharing a commitment to selfless service. The dedicated doctors and medical staff work diligently to provide care, their years of expertise complemented by warm smiles that reflect Fijian hospitality. Each year, up to 20 medical teams volunteer at The Mission, delivering essential healthcare to Fijians while gaining transformative cultural experiences.
California optometrist Dr. Randy Edwards, who volunteered at the facility, described his journey as enlightening, stating that aiding others is incredibly fulfilling. Dr. Peter Andrews, a Sacramento ophthalmologist, praised the clinic at Buca Bay as an “oasis,” noting that it holds the trust of the local community.
Volunteers not only immerse themselves in the culture but also experience a spiritual connection through their service. Founder Dr. Marta Tooma emphasized the unique aspect of The Mission, which aims for a deeper healing experience beyond physical ailments. Chaplain Petero Siwatibau, who has been at The Mission since its inception, plays a crucial role in providing spiritual support to both visitors and patients.
Numerous remarkable transformations have taken place since the mission opened, including restoring sight to those who had been blind. One notable case involved a 34-year-old woman whose vision was restored through a corneal transplant made possible by international donations, illustrating the significant impact of humanitarian missions in this region.
Among the beneficiaries was Nasiban Bibi, who traveled early in the morning to undergo cataract surgery with hopes of clear vision. Another local, Filomena Tui, highlighted the world-class medical services available at Natuvu as a significant boon for residents of Vanua Levu.
At The Mission, every individual is treated with respect and dignity, fostering a supportive environment among staff and patients alike. Chef Vika Vakaotia takes pride in the nourishing meals prepared at the mission, emphasizing a focus on plant-based nutrition.
In addition to receiving medical care, locals benefit from the clinic’s presence, as nearby vendors provide affordable meals for those waiting for treatment. Siteri Rabulukovu, a local vendor, shared how her sales aid in supporting her family.
Since its establishment, The Mission at Natuvu Creek has positively impacted the lives of more than 10,000 patients annually, especially in the underserved northern region of Fiji, where eye care is limited. The mission’s volunteers provide a wide range of medical services, addressing crucial healthcare needs while also hosting students from Pepperdine University for volunteer programs.
