Police have initiated a nationwide crackdown targeting what they suspect to be an unlawful explosive trafficking operation. This initiative, dubbed “Operation Expo,” involved police raids on three homes in Lami, as reported by The Fiji Times.

As part of the operation, roadblocks were established in various locations, including Sawani, Suva, and Lami, with additional roadblocks anticipated across the country. Police Commissioner Isikia Savua indicated that extensive searches would be conducted in homes belonging to all suspected individuals.

Concerns arose following the dismissal of miners from the Emperor Gold Mine, now known as Vatukoula Gold Mine, who were found to have smuggled electrical generators out of the mine. The mine’s general manager, Charles Barclay, confirmed enhanced security measures are now in place to prevent any further theft of detonators. He announced the introduction of a reward system offering financial compensation for information leading to the apprehension of individuals involved in the illegal smuggling of explosives.

Last year, four mine workers faced larceny charges for similar actions. Divisional Police Commissioner Indar Prasad has declared that all suspicious homes and vehicles will be thoroughly searched.

Police are currently collaborating with the Department of Mineral Resources to ascertain whether explosives discovered in a recent raid originated from the Vatukoula mine or were smuggled into the country. If the investigation reveals that the explosives were brought in from abroad, Commissioner Savua will advocate for tighter Customs regulations.

To bolster community involvement in the investigation, the police have urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the Crime Stoppers hotline.

This concerted effort by law enforcement highlights the importance of community awareness and involvement in addressing and combating illegal activities that pose potential risks to public safety.

Summary: Police are undertaking a nationwide operation called “Operation Expo” to disrupt an illegal explosive trafficking network. Roadblocks and home searches are part of the initiative, particularly following thefts linked to employees at the Vatukoula Gold Mine. Authorities are calling on the public to assist in identifying suspicious activities.

Hopeful Spin: The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community in this operation reflect a proactive approach to ensuring safety and security, showcasing the potential for teamwork in tackling crime and promoting a safer environment for all.
