Authorities are searching for a man suspected of being responsible for the death of his partner yesterday. The woman succumbed to injuries inflicted by the suspect, who remains at large as of last night’s report.
The couple had reportedly been staying at a rented residence in the upscale area of Albert Lee Place, near Nailuva Road in Suva. The situation came to light when a family member alerted her partner, leading to the police being notified.
Investigations are currently underway, with officials stating that a post-mortem examination will help determine the exact cause of death.
The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection expressed its sorrow and outrage over the incident in a statement released last night. The ministry is calling for prompt justice for the victim and urges immediate action from all sectors of society to prevent further tragedies.
“We stand in solidarity with the victim’s family and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence. This tragic event comes just five months after another woman lost her life under similar circumstances in April,” the statement noted.
The ministry highlighted the ongoing issue of violence against women in Fiji, where nearly two out of three women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. “This must stop. We urge every individual, family, and community to unite in taking action to prevent violence against women and girls. It is essential that our homes, neighborhoods, and communities are safe and respectful for all.”
Minister Lynda Tabuya remarked, “This loss is unacceptable and heartbreaking. To all women and girls, you are not alone. Support is available through the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, the National Domestic Violence Helpline (1560), and the Child Helpline (1325). We are committed to fighting for justice for the victim. No woman should live in fear.”
The Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls (Fiji NAP PVAWG), initiated in June 2023, is a pivotal aspect of Fiji’s strategy to address this pressing issue.
