The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit in response to serious financial mismanagement issues identified in previous administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced that the audit will scrutinize financial records from 2018 to 2020, a move prompted by reports from the Auditor General highlighting significant concerns about improper use of Council funds.
Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee meeting on Tuesday, Magnus expressed the Council’s commitment to fostering accountability and responsible governance. He emphasized, “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered.” This audit aims to uncover the full extent of financial irregularities and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
The forensic audit, which has the backing of the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will concentrate on critical areas such as cash controls, payroll systems, asset management, project oversight, and regulatory compliance. Magnus highlighted that this initiative is essential for establishing a robust foundation of financial integrity for future operations.
“Our goal is to secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are committed to that pursuit,” Magnus stated. Furthermore, he assured that any identified cases of mismanagement would be reported to the appropriate authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
This proactive step taken by the Nasinu Town Council signals a positive shift toward transparency and accountability, reinforcing public trust in local governance. As the audit unfolds, it offers an opportunity for significant improvement in financial practices, potentially leading to enhanced services for residents in the future.
