The Nasinu Town Council has initiated a forensic audit to tackle significant concerns regarding financial mismanagement stemming from previous administrations. Council Executive Chairman Felix Magnus announced that the audit will review financial records from 2018 to 2020, a measure prompted by alarming findings in the Auditor General’s reports, which indicated potential misuse of Council funds.
During his address to the Public Accounts Committee, Magnus emphasized the Council’s dedication to transparency and responsible governance. “We are here to set things right. The misappropriation of millions has compromised essential services, and the people of Nasinu have suffered,” he stated. He expressed confidence that the audit will reveal the scope of these issues and that corrective measures will be implemented to prevent a recurrence.
The forensic audit, which is set to be conducted with backing from both the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Finance, will analyze various financial areas including cash controls, payroll management, asset oversight, project supervision, and adherence to regulations. Magnus noted that this initiative aims to establish a robust framework for financial integrity moving forward.
“Our objective is to finally secure an Unqualified Opinion on Nasinu’s accounts, and we are working relentlessly to achieve that,” Magnus declared. He also mentioned that any identified cases of financial mismanagement will be referred to relevant authorities, including the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), for further investigation.
This proactive approach not only demonstrates a commitment to accountability but also instills hope for improved governance and enhanced public trust in the management of local resources. By addressing past mismanagement and putting in place structures for transparency, the Nasinu Town Council is taking meaningful steps towards a more accountable future, benefiting the community it serves.
