The Nasinu Town Council has announced plans to implement an automated accounting system aimed at enhancing the efficiency of determining departmental costs. During a recent presentation of the 2011-2017 annual reports to the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, the acting chief financial officer, Imran Khan, responded to committee chair Illesa Vanawalu’s inquiry about the potential introduction of a cost center for better evaluation of each department.
Khan explained that the council is currently utilizing Excel spreadsheets to manually track departmental reports and compare costs with revenues. He noted that while certain areas have seen the introduction of additional administration fees and fines, the council faces challenges due to its reliance on various agencies. For example, in the enforcement of solid waste management, a significant portion of the fines collected is directed to the Ministry of Environment, leaving the council with minimal revenue to cover the related enforcement costs.
He further highlighted that while departments providing vital services operate as cost centers, these services, such as health licensing, often incur minimal or no charges, making it essential for the council to sustain public health services without incurring excessive costs.
The initiative towards an automated system could lead to improved financial management, allowing the Nasinu Town Council to allocate resources more effectively and ensure the sustainability of crucial services. This development offers a promising step towards better financial oversight and ultimately enhances the quality of services delivered to the community.
By adopting modern technology, the council aims to streamline its operations and improve its overall financial health, benefiting both the organization and the public it serves.
