Nasinu Council Unveils Ambitious Plans for Elderly Care and Childcare Solutions

The Nasinu Town Council is planning to construct a retirement home for the elderly and a modern childcare facility for single mothers. Council chairman Felix Magnus announced that funds raised during the 2024 Nasinu Festival will support these projects, including the retirement home.

Magnus stated that the council recognized the need for such a facility and has already secured land for the project. “The council decided to establish the first retirement home in Nasinu to care for our senior citizens who are unable to rely on their families,” he remarked. He added that discussions with the Ministry of Lands for the necessary approvals will follow after engaging with stakeholders.

He noted that the Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART) is currently providing space for the existing Old People’s Home in Nasinu, which he acknowledged has not been adequately maintained. “We have not met our obligation to care for the elderly home here. A portion of this fund will also go towards renovating the existing elderly home and ensuring it is equipped with essential items such as wheelchairs, proper beds, and lighting,” he said.

Addressing the growing number of single mothers in Nasinu, Magnus emphasized that the new childcare facility would help ensure that children are not left unattended while their parents are at work. “When they go to work, who looks after their kids at home? By establishing this facility, their children can be cared for while they are at work,” he explained.

Magnus reiterated the council’s commitment to fostering initiatives aimed at reducing poverty within the community.
