Nasinu Council Sets Ambitious Plans for Elderly and Single Mothers

The Nasinu Town Council is planning to construct a retirement home for the elderly and a modern childcare facility aimed at supporting single mothers.

Council chairman Felix Magnus announced that the funds raised during the 2024 Nasinu Festival will help advance these initiatives, including the retirement home project in Nasinu. He pointed out that the council recognized the necessity for such a home and has already secured land for its development.

“The council developed the idea of establishing the first retirement home in Nasinu to care for our senior citizens who are unable to rely on their families for support,” he stated. Magnus mentioned that discussions will be initiated with the Ministry of Lands to obtain the necessary approvals before engaging with stakeholders.

He noted that the Housing Assistance and Relief Trust (HART) currently provides accommodation for the Old People’s Home in Nasinu. “We have not met our responsibilities effectively in caring for that elderly home,” he admitted. “Therefore, part of the funds will also be allocated for renovations at the elderly home to ensure it is equipped with essential items like wheelchairs, proper beds, and adequate lighting.”

Furthermore, with the rising number of single mothers in Nasinu, the childcare facility aims to tackle the issue of children being left unsupervised. “When these mothers are at work, it raises concerns about who is taking care of their children at home. By constructing this facility, children will be looked after in a safe environment while their parents work,” Magnus explained.

He reiterated the council’s commitment to sustaining efforts that help alleviate poverty in the community.
