Narewa Youth Unite: Transforming Agriculture and Community Spirit

A committed group of young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is working to enhance their community through agricultural initiatives, particularly in farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which includes 69 members, primarily youths.

Co-founder Buli Ratu shared that the cooperative has been operating since the 1960s, initially focusing on cassava farming. Currently, it comprises 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men, who are not only involved in agriculture but also participate in various community service activities, including cleaning efforts in the village to promote healthy living.

Last year, the cooperative successfully registered with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they were provided with a tractor by the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the funding covered by the Government.

Mr. Ratu expressed the group’s gratitude for acquiring the tractor, which will significantly aid their land preparation activities. He noted their commitment to securing one-third of the total cost, emphasizing their belief in teamwork and unity to achieve fruitful results in the future.

The youth have adopted the solesolevaki approach, which fosters collaboration in farming tasks. The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has also established a contract with the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to supply vegetables and cassava. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu highlighted that engaging youth in agriculture is essential for building stronger, more productive communities.
