Narewa Youth Unite for Agricultural Revival

A group of committed young men and women from Narewa Village in Nadi is working to enhance their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly in farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which consists of 69 members, including young people.

Co-founder Buli Ratu stated that the cooperative has been functioning since the 1960s, primarily focusing on cassava farming. Currently, the cooperative includes 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men. Ratu emphasized that their efforts extend beyond agriculture to include community service, such as participating in village clean-up activities to promote healthier living.

Last year, the cooperative achieved official registration with assistance from the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they were fortunate to receive a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the funding covered by the government.

“Our new tractor allows us to conduct essential land preparation work,” said Mr. Ratu. He added, “Thanks to our determination, we were able to contribute one-third of the total cost of the tractor. We recognize the significant challenges ahead, but believe that our collective effort will lead to substantial rewards in the near future.”

The youth in the cooperative have been utilizing the solesolevaki, or group work, farming method to support one another. The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has also secured a contract with the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, supplying them with vegetables and cassava.

Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu highlighted that engaging youth in agriculture is crucial for building stronger and more productive communities.
