Narewa Village Youth Unite for Agricultural Transformation

A group of dedicated young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is focused on enhancing their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly farming.

This initiative is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 members, including youth. Co-founder Buli Ratu highlighted that the cooperative has been in operation since the 1960s, primarily concentrating on cassava farming.

Currently, the cooperative includes 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men. Mr. Ratu emphasized that their efforts extend beyond agriculture to community service, such as cleaning the village to promote healthier living.

Last year, the group successfully registered as a cooperative with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with a portion of the funding provided by the government.

Mr. Ratu expressed gratitude for obtaining the tractor, which will aid in land preparation tasks. He noted, “Our determination allowed us to contribute one-third of the total cost of the tractor.” He believes that their unity will lead to significant rewards in the future.

The youth members are utilizing the solesolevaki, or group work, method of farming to support one another. The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has also secured a contract with the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to supply vegetables and cassava.

Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu emphasized that engaging youth in agriculture is crucial for building stronger and more productive communities.
