Narewa Village Youth Drive Agricultural Change

A committed group of young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is focused on enhancing their community through various agricultural initiatives. This group is known as the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, comprising 69 members, including young people.

Co-founder Buli Ratu noted that while the cooperative has been in operation since the 1960s, its primary activity was cassava farming. Currently, the cooperative includes 32 youths, 10 women, and 27 men, who are actively involved in not just agriculture but also community service, such as village clean-up efforts for a healthier environment.

Last year, the cooperative officially registered with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the expense supported by the government.

“The tractor will significantly aid us in land preparation activities,” Mr. Ratu remarked. “Our commitment to contribute one-third of the total tractor cost made this possible. We understand the challenges ahead and have confidence that our unity will bring about substantial benefits in the near future.”

He mentioned that the youth have adopted the solesolevaki approach, which emphasizes cooperative farming to support one another. Additionally, the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has secured a contract with Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to supply them with vegetables and cassava.

Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu emphasized that involving youth in agriculture is essential for building stronger and more productive communities.
