A committed group of young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is focused on enhancing their community through agricultural initiatives, particularly farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 members, including young people.
Co-founder Buli Ratu noted that their cooperative has been operational since the 1960s, primarily concentrating on cassava farming. Currently, the cooperative consists of 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men who are not only involved in agriculture but also actively engage in community service, helping to clean the village for a healthier environment.
Last year, the cooperative successfully registered with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they acquired a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the cost subsidized by the government. Mr. Ratu expressed gratitude for the new tractor, which facilitates their land preparation efforts.
He emphasized that the cooperative managed to contribute one-third of the tractor’s total cost due to their determination. Mr. Ratu also highlighted the significant tasks ahead and the belief that their unity would yield substantial rewards in the future. The youth have adopted the solesolevaki approach, which promotes group work in farming to support one another.
The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has secured a partnership with the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to supply vegetables and cassava. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu stated that involving youth in agriculture is essential for building stronger, more productive communities.
