The residents of Namosi have expressed a definitive stance against any mining developments on their land, irrespective of potential changes to the mining Act. The chairman of the landowners’ group, Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA), Sipiriano Nariva, emphasized that this position will be maintained for future generations.
Earlier, Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua had indicated at the Great Council of Chiefs meeting that the province would reconsider development proposals following a review of the mining Act. However, Nariva insisted that the community categorically opposes mining activities, highlighting that while the chief may support review-led developments, the landowners themselves are against them.
Nariva pointed out the environmental concerns associated with mining, reiterating their dedication to sustainable development instead. “We do not support mining, even if the law is amended,” he stated firmly, indicating a clear divide between the perspectives of the chief and the landowners. He also reflected on potential miscommunication with Tui Namosi, asserting that the chief is indeed aware of the landowners’ preference for sustainable practices over mining or hydroelectric projects.
Reaffirming their commitment to protecting the environment, Nariva concluded that regardless of any legal adjustments, the landowners’ opposition to mining remains steadfast.
This situation highlights the importance of community voices in decision-making processes about land use and development. The focus on sustainable solutions showcases a growing awareness of environmental preservation among the residents. If this commitment continues, it may lead to innovative and eco-friendly development strategies that align more closely with the values of the community.
