The registration period for the Namaka Sevens and Volleyball Tournament has been extended due to a rescheduling of the event dates. The volleyball matches are set to occur on January 17-18, while the rugby sevens will take place on January 24-25, both at Namaka Public School in Nadi.
Tournament coordinator Biu Tadranu explained that the decision to extend registration was made to avoid a conflict with the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s next week at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Since the launch of the tournament last Friday, approximately half of the teams have already signed up.
For the volleyball competition, three categories will kick off, with 24 men’s and 10 women’s teams expected to compete. There is also a target of 16 teams for the mixed category. A total of six volleyball courts will be utilized for the event.
In terms of rugby, only senior men’s and women’s teams will participate, with an anticipated 24 teams for men and eight women’s teams. Although the under-20 category is not yet confirmed, there has been significant interest from potential participants.
Tadranu stated that this marks the inaugural Namaka Volleyball and Rugby Sevens tournament, highlighting its dual nature as a sporting festival. The logo symbolizes an airplane, reflecting Nadi’s identity as a tourist hub. The organizers aim to attract both local and overseas teams, fostering a platform for youth to showcase their talents.
Several teams have already registered, including notable volleyball clubs and resorts, while rugby teams such as Airport Rugby and Sabeto Rugby are also on board. Namaka Public School head teacher Arvin Kumar expressed excitement over hosting the tournaments, emphasizing the importance of community involvement.
The event is a collaboration between West Event Fiji and the Waqadra Brothers Community, having been officially launched last Friday.
Registration fees for the competitions are as follows: Men’s rugby 7s – $500, Women’s rugby team – $400, Men’s volleyball – $300, Women’s volleyball – $200, and Mixed teams – $250. Prize money is substantial, with men’s rugby winners set to receive $5,000, women’s rugby winners $2,500, and volleyball winners, depending on category, receiving amounts ranging from $1,000 to $2,000.
This tournament not only promises vibrant competition but also serves as a catalyst for community engagement and youth empowerment, fostering a spirit of togetherness and showcasing local talents.
