Nakasi Market Opens: A New Era for Local Vendors

The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, inaugurated the newly built Nakasi market, which cost $1.98 million and will serve 100 vendors.

Minister Nalumisa emphasized that the Nakasi Market reflects the Coalition Government’s dedication to the National Development Plan, which aims to empower the people of Fiji through unity. He noted that many vendors have been operating in difficult conditions along the Nasinu and Nausori corridors for years, and they are now provided with a clean and secure market that enhances their livelihoods and offers a dignified space for business growth.

He described the market as a symbol of opportunity and empowerment for the vendors, stating, “This is not just commerce; it is about empowering individuals and communities.” He highlighted the investment as not merely financial but as a commitment to human potential and the future of Nakasi, Nausori, and Fiji.

The new facility includes restroom amenities for vendors and parking for customers, which Minister Nalumisa deemed essential for the growing urban area of Nakasi. He mentioned that this achievement stems from the cooperation between the Nausori Town Council, the government, and the Fiji Corrections Service, which provided the land for the project.

Nalumisa assured that the government is dedicated to establishing necessary laws and regulations for municipal markets across Fiji. He stated, “We are enhancing transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the management of all municipal markets with the new market regulations.” He further added that the Nakasi Market plays a crucial role in ensuring food security, boosting local government revenue, and supporting community vitality.
