Naiyaca Campus Dream Stalled: Unpacking the $40M Dilemma

Recently, the ambitious Naiyaca Campus project aimed at providing affordable tertiary education options for students in Fiji’s Northern Division has faced significant delays and setbacks. Initially initiated in 2018 with a budget of $40 million, construction has stagnated since 2020, leaving behind incomplete structures and a sense of disappointment in the community.

The Fiji National University (FNU) had engaged Civil and Environmental Engineering Solutions Ltd (CEESOL) as the main contractor for the project, with support from Design Hut, Edison Consultants, and Quantech Pacific. Although the project commenced with site preparations in 2015, construction encountered numerous obstacles that halted progress. A contractor involved in the project cited issues related to drawing coordination and communication breakdown among the various consultants as primary factors for the delays.

There were instances where conflicting information from different consultants regarding design specifications, such as the positioning of buildings and infrastructure, further hindered the project’s advancement. The contractor noted that essential decisions, including the placement of a security guard hut, have been stalled due to uncertainty from both FNU and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) regarding road elevation.

Despite these challenges, the situation highlights an opportunity for growth and learning in project management within the community. By addressing communication flaws and enhancing collaborative efforts among all stakeholders, future projects can avoid similar pitfalls. The Naiyaca Campus remains a critical investment in education, and with renewed focus and coordination, it has the potential to fulfill its promise of offering accessible education to the region’s youth.

The community continues to hope for a resolution that allows for the project’s resumption, emphasizing the importance of education accessibility and the transformative power it holds for the future generations in Fiji.
