Naitasiri’s Rising Crime Wave: A Community on Alert

The Naitasiri Provincial Council has expressed concern over the increasing incidence of illegal activities and crime in informal settlements within its jurisdiction. During a council meeting on Thursday, Chairman Jone Baleidrokadroka highlighted the troubling reality that a diverse population residing on Naitasiri land is involved in such activities.

Baleidrokadroka pointed out various areas impacted, including Tamavua to Colo-i-Suva, and Cunningham to Sakoca, all categorized as Naitasiri land. He emphasized the multiple issues surrounding land disputes and the individuals engaged in criminal behavior.

In response to the rising concerns, the council discussed launching awareness programs aimed at educating residents in informal settlements throughout Naitasiri. “The first step is to implement an immediate awareness initiative in all villages and informal settlements,” Baleidrokadroka stated. He suggested forming crime stopper committees to tackle these issues.

He urged the community to take the situation seriously, warning that failing to do so could have dire consequences for society. When asked if Naitasiri would consider enforcing strict measures against those partaking in illegal activities, Baleidrokadroka clarified that such an approach is not currently being contemplated.

“We haven’t really discussed that option,” he explained. “While other provinces may have taken drastic actions, including relocating individuals from villages, Naitasiri is known for its compassion and inclusivity, welcoming people from various regions and backgrounds.”

Baleidrokadroka concluded that addressing stringent measures remains a last resort, and the immediate focus will be on community awareness and support.
