Naitasiri’s Hidden Crisis: Illegal Activities on the Rise

The Naitasiri Provincial Council has expressed concern over the rising levels of illegal activities and crime in informal settlements within its jurisdiction. Chairman Jone Baleidrokadroka highlighted during a council meeting on Thursday that the significant number of individuals from various backgrounds residing on land in Naitasiri are engaging in unlawful activities.

Mr. Baleidrokadroka pointed out that areas such as Tamavua to Colo-i-Suva and Cunningham to Sakoca fall within Naitasiri’s territory, pointing towards various land dispute issues tied to these activities. He emphasized the council’s intent to investigate the situation further and implement necessary measures.

The council is planning to launch awareness programs targeting informal settlements in Naitasiri. Mr. Baleidrokadroka stressed the immediate need for these programs to be established in all communities within the area. He suggested forming crime stopper committees to actively address the rising issue.

He cautioned that a collective effort is crucial to prevent the situation from worsening, stating, “We all need to really wake up. Otherwise, it will be terrible for our society.”

When asked about the possibility of introducing strict measures against individuals involved in illegal activities, Mr. Baleidrokadroka noted that this approach is not being considered by the province at present. He mentioned that while some provinces have taken extreme steps, including evacuating residents from villages, Naitasiri’s approach is rooted in compassion towards its diverse inhabitants.

“We are not going to touch that area of discussion; we’ll just leave that for later because that’s the last option,” he concluded.
