Naitasiri Rugby Union is ambitiously positioning itself for success by setting clear goals for 2025, aimed at fostering local talent to represent its senior team. The union recently launched its inaugural round of club games at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, where ten teams showcased emerging players filled with potential.
Lemeki Talanacolo, a committee member of the union, expressed how crucial these club games are for identifying and developing talent for higher levels of competition. “We have completed two competitions of our 10s tournament and seen a number of promising players. Our focus will be on these talents to fuel the future of the Naitasiri Rugby team,” stated Talanacolo.
The excitement surrounding the first round of club games is palpable, with expectations that more teams will join in subsequent weeks. The union aims to strengthen its programs in accordance with Fiji Rugby Union requirements, emphasizing a commitment to homegrown players and a return to a competitive base for the senior team by 2025.
In highlighting the essence of homegrown talent, Talanacolo noted that past club games had not achieved the desired effectiveness, often relying on players from outside the area. This year, the strategy is clear: “We want local players from our competitions to represent their villages and, ultimately, the Naitasiri senior team.”
Moreover, this initiative is reminiscent of similar efforts seen across other rugby unions in Fiji, such as the Lautoka Rugby Union’s focus on integrating youth and developing local talent for a brighter future in the sport. Such programs not only improve competitive performance but instill a sense of community and shared purpose among players.
As the Naitasiri Rugby Union moves forward, there is a hopeful sense of optimism. The initiative to cultivate local players reflects a broader trend in rugby that prioritizes grassroots development, thus ensuring the sport continues to thrive in the community. With dedicated efforts, there exists a promising pathway for local athletes to achieve greatness, inspiring a new generation of players who will contribute to the legacy of Fiji rugby.
