Nadi’s Traffic Trial: A Solution or a Headache?

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) have generated varied reactions among residents and commuters. The initiative is designed to ease traffic congestion by modifying existing traffic flow layouts, which will involve some demolition and reconstruction work.

As a part of the trial, traffic signals throughout the town have been temporarily deactivated. Delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad, representing Danny’s Pte Limited, expressed his frustration with the situation, stating that the new traffic patterns have caused delays, making it difficult for him to complete timely deliveries, which even impacted his lunch break. Meanwhile, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu noticed some positive changes in traffic flow but suggested that widening the main street could enhance the improvements further.

Commuter Rima Chand acknowledged the potential fuel savings from the new two-way traffic system but lamented the lengthy hour-long delays on the road. In contrast, Janend Ram expressed his preference for the previous one-way system, as he believes it effectively reduced congestion.

The reconstruction phase of the traffic management plan is set to occur from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by the trial of the newly designed layout which will run from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025.

Key adjustments include converting Queens Road (Main Street) to single-lane two-way traffic, reconfiguring Andrews Road and Raniga Street for similar traffic flow, altering the direction of Naitavo Lane to one-way, and maintaining single-lane one-way traffic on several local streets. Heavy vehicles will be restricted from the main street but allowed on other streets such as Andrews Street and Raniga Street.

The FRA encourages residents to provide feedback on these trials, aiming for continued improvements in traffic management and congestion reduction.

Overall, while the transition may be challenging initially, it is a proactive approach to modernize traffic conditions in Nadi Town. This could foster more efficient travel for residents and businesses once the system stabilizes. With community input and ongoing adjustments, the hope is for a smoother traffic flow in the future.
