The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) have elicited varied reactions from the community. These trials aim to reduce traffic congestion through the implementation of redesigned traffic flow patterns that necessitate the demolition and reconstruction of current structures.
As part of the trial, all traffic signals in the town have been temporarily disabled. Delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad, who works for Danny’s Pte Limited, voiced his frustration regarding the delays that have resulted from the new traffic arrangements. He noted that his delivery schedule has been significantly impacted, which even disrupts his lunch breaks due to the hour-long delays.
Local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu observed signs of improvement in traffic flow but suggested that widening the main street could further enhance the situation. He advocated for the removal of car parks, pot plants, and palm trees from the main road to create additional space.
Commuter Rima Chand, traveling from Sonasali to Nadi, found advantages in the new two-way traffic system, claiming it could help save fuel, although she acknowledged the downside of longer travel times. On the other hand, Janend Ram expressed his preference for the previous one-way system, stating it effectively reduces congestion in town.
The reconstruction phase of the project is scheduled from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by a trial of the new traffic layout until March 8, 2025.
Key modifications in the traffic management include:
– Queens Road (Main Street) will now feature single-lane two-way traffic.
– Andrews Road and Raniga Street will be reconfigured to accommodate single-lane two-way traffic.
– Naitavo Lane’s direction will be reversed to one-way traffic.
– Sahu Khan Lane, Clay Street, and Market Lane will retain their single-lane one-way status.
– Baker Lane and Vunavau Lane’s directions will also be reversed to optimize traffic flow.
– Heavy vehicles will be prohibited from the main street but will be allowed on Andrews Street, Raniga Street, and Ratu Naevo Road.
In a proactive move, the FRA is encouraging residents to share their feedback on the trial to fine-tune the traffic flow and reduce congestion in the long term.
