Nadi’s Lifeline: A Game-Changer for Flood Resilience in Fiji

The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project. This report was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific. A collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council will take place to explore potential funding and implementation strategies for this significant initiative.

The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is designed to bolster flood prevention measures and mitigate flood risks. This will involve the construction of essential infrastructure such as drainage facilities, embankments, and a reservoir specifically for Nadi town, which is situated in the lower reaches of the Nadi River. Over the years, the project has progressed through various phases of planning and design, focusing on both structural and non-structural methods for flood mitigation in the Nadi River basin.

As the largest climate resilience project in Fiji, this initiative is set to significantly minimize economic and social impacts, acknowledging Nadi’s critical role in the tourism industry and its position as a primary gateway for the nation. Additionally, the project is in line with broader disaster risk resilience strategies as outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.

This project represents a crucial step towards safeguarding the community of Nadi and enhancing overall climate resilience in Fiji, which is a hopeful and positive direction for the nation’s future. As Fiji seeks to navigate the challenges posed by climate change, initiatives like this highlight the importance of proactive measures in protecting both its economy and its residents.
