Nadi’s Flooding Dilemma: A Crisis Since the 1970s

Flooding issues in Nadi town have plagued various governments since the 1970s, with ongoing challenges related to waste management. Opposition member of Parliament Faiyaz Koya raised this concern on Monday during a debate regarding the Review Report of the Nadi Town Council.

Mr. Koya pointed out that this long-standing problem remains a significant challenge for the council. “This has been an ongoing issue for many, many years,” he stated. He emphasized that while other towns in Fiji have designated areas for refuse collection and proper waste disposal, Nadi Town lacks such facilities.

According to Koya, the report indicates that efforts are being made to identify a suitable location for establishing a refuse collection site. He views this as an opportunity to promote recycling and proper waste management practices that would protect the environment.

Additionally, Mr. Koya praised the Nadi Town Council for achieving a 92 percent collection rate of town rates, with only 8 percent outstanding for the year. He noted that Nadi is rapidly growing, particularly due to developments extending from the airport to Denarau, distinguishing it from other towns and cities in Fiji.
