Nadi Traffic Trials: Progress or Pitfall?

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) have elicited a variety of reactions from locals and travelers since their initiation yesterday. These trials are part of an effort to reduce traffic congestion through the redesign of traffic flow patterns, which will involve the demolition and reconstruction of some existing infrastructure.

As part of the trial phase, all traffic signals in the area have been temporarily disabled, leading to a mixed bag of experiences among the public. Rajinesh Prasad, a delivery driver for Danny’s Pte Limited, voiced his frustrations with the disruptions, explaining that delays have resulted in missed delivery timelines and impacted his lunch schedule.

Conversely, Nadi resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu noted some positive changes in traffic movement but recommended that road widths be increased for better flow. He believes the removal of parking spots, pot plants, and palm trees along the main street could significantly help with this.

Commuter Rima Chand recognized the benefits of the new two-way system, stating it might lead to fuel savings; however, she acknowledges the significant increases in travel time. In contrast, Janend Ram expressed a preference for the previous one-way traffic system, arguing that it effectively reduces congestion in town.

The reconstruction is slated to take place from November 23 to December 8, 2024. This will be followed by a trial of the new layout that will run from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025. Key changes in the traffic management include converting Queens Road to a single-lane two-way street, reconfiguring Andrews Road and Raniga Street, and adjusting certain lanes for optimized traffic flow. Heavy vehicles will be restricted from the main street, though they will be allowed on other specified roads.

The FRA is encouraging residents to share their feedback during this trial period, which is an important step towards refining traffic management and ensuring better flow in the long run.

This initiative reflects the FRA’s commitment to enhancing the local infrastructure and addressing residents’ concerns. As the trial progresses, it will be essential for both the authority and the community to engage in open dialogue to identify effective solutions for traffic issues in Nadi Town.
