The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report pertaining to the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which has been conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Several government bodies, including the Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics Ministry, Agriculture and Waterways Ministry, Lands and Mineral Resources Ministry, Local Government Ministry, and the Nadi Town Council, will collaborate to explore the funding and execution strategies for the project.
The primary goal of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is to enhance flood prevention efforts and mitigate flood-related risks. This will be achieved through the construction of various infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir specifically designed for Nadi town, which is situated in the lower reaches of the Nadi River.
Having undergone numerous planning phases and conceptual designs over the years, the project emphasizes both structural and non-structural measures aimed at flood mitigation within the Nadi River basin.
This initiative stands as Fiji’s largest climate resilience project, expected to significantly lessen economic and social losses, particularly given Nadi’s vital role in the tourism sector and as a major gateway for the nation.
Moreover, the project is in line with the national goals outlined in the National Development Plan 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, reinforcing the country’s commitment to disaster risk resilience.
Overall, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project signals a proactive approach to climate change and disaster management in Fiji, demonstrating the government’s dedication to safeguarding the community and enhancing the region’s resilience against potential flood impacts.
