The Cabinet has reviewed the findings from the Alternative Options Assessment Report concerning the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Key ministries—including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, Local Government, and the Nadi Town Council—will now look into funding and implementation strategies for this essential initiative.
The primary goal of the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project is to enhance flood prevention strategies and mitigate flood risks in Nadi town. This will be achieved through the construction of various infrastructures, including drainage facilities, embankments, and a reservoir, particularly targeting areas near the lower reaches of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has progressed through multiple planning phases and conceptual designs, focusing on both structural and non-structural flood mitigation measures within the Nadi River basin.
As the largest climate resilience initiative in Fiji, this project is poised to not only safeguard the local economy but also to protect social interests, given Nadi’s vital role in the tourism sector and its status as a primary gateway for Fiji to the global market. Moreover, this project aligns with the broader disaster risk resilience strategies encapsulated in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050.
This initiative reflects a proactive approach to climate change and disaster management, promising a more resilient future for Nadi and its surrounding communities.
Summary: The Cabinet is moving forward with the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, aimed at strengthening flood defenses for Nadi town. It includes crucial construction efforts and aligns with national disaster risk strategies, underscoring its importance for economic and social stability in the region, particularly in the tourism sector.
