The Cabinet has reviewed the findings of the Alternative Options Assessment Report regarding the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project, which was conducted by the Australian Infrastructure Financing Facility for the Pacific.
Collaboration among several ministries, including Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Agriculture and Waterways, Lands and Mineral Resources, as well as the Local Government Ministry and the Nadi Town Council, will focus on identifying funding and implementation strategies for the project.
The Nadi Flood Alleviation Project aims to enhance flood prevention and minimize flood risks by constructing essential infrastructure such as drainage systems, embankments, and a reservoir for the town of Nadi, located downstream of the Nadi River.
Over the years, the project has progressed through various planning stages and conceptual designs, detailing both structural and non-structural measures for flood mitigation in the Nadi River basin.
This initiative stands out as Fiji’s largest climate resilience project, with the potential to significantly reduce economic and social losses in light of Nadi’s vital position in the tourism industry, serving as a primary gateway for Fiji to the world.
Additionally, the project aligns with the disaster risk resilience strategies highlighted in the National Development Plan for 2025-2029 and Vision 2050, ensuring a forward-thinking approach to climate challenges.
In summary, the Nadi Flood Alleviation Project represents a crucial step toward bolstering Fiji’s infrastructure against flooding while also supporting its economy and tourism sector. The collaborative effort across various government entities reflects a proactive approach to managing risks and building a sustainable future for Nadi and its residents. This project also provides hope for enhanced safety and resilience in the face of climate change, illustrating a commitment to safeguarding communities in Fiji.
