Business owners in Nadi are facing significant challenges due to the increasing presence of street dwellers and beggars in the area, leading some to take action themselves. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, expressed frustration over the need to regularly clean up after individuals who leave behind waste near the store. He emphasized the need for a long-term solution and called on the Nadi Town Council (NTC) to implement measures to address the situation effectively.
Khan pointed out that the growing number of individuals loitering in front of their businesses poses a threat, not only to staff but also to customers. He suggested a collaborative approach involving the police, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health, and NGOs to find a resolution. He also mentioned that many of these individuals could be traced back to families who should be accountable for them.
Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, echoed Khan’s sentiments, stating that the government and social welfare agencies need to be actively involved in helping these individuals access professional care. Jerry Gounder, another businessman, mentioned that the council frequently faces similar issues, which often get referred to the police, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
NTC special administrator chairperson Salicieli Raiwalui acknowledged the importance of the topic. While attempts were made to reach out for comments from the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, no response has yet been received.
This situation reflects a broader societal issue, emphasizing the need for compassion and coordinated assistance for vulnerable individuals while also supporting local businesses. Implementing a structured support system could alleviate the burdens faced by both the street dwellers and the business community, fostering a healthier environment for everyone involved.
In summary, business owners in Nadi are urging for collaborative action from local authorities to address the challenge posed by street dwellers. By creating a comprehensive plan, there is hope for a more effective resolution that prioritizes the welfare of all community members.
