Business owners in Nadi are becoming increasingly frustrated with street dwellers and beggars who are causing disruptions outside their establishments. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, highlighted the challenges faced by his staff, who frequently have to clean up waste left by these individuals. He emphasized that while temporary measures have been taken by shop owners to address the issue, a permanent solution is necessary.
Khan urged the Nadi Town Council (NTC) to take action, suggesting a collaborative meeting involving local authorities, police, and social welfare agencies to devise a comprehensive plan to tackle the problem. He noted that the number of street dwellers is increasing, leading them to gather in front of shops, asking for money and sometimes displaying aggressive behavior when confronted.
Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, echoed Khan’s sentiment by advocating for government involvement to ensure these individuals receive the support they need, particularly through professional care services like St Giles. Businessman Jerry Gounder pointed out that the NTC has its own difficulties managing similar situations at their facilities and typically involves the police for assistance.
Salicieli Raiwalui, the special administrator chairperson of the NTC, acknowledged the significance of the issue brought forth by local business owners. Additionally, inquiries directed to Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, have yet to receive a response.
The challenges presented by homelessness and begging in Nadi highlight the complex interplay between social welfare and business operations. However, this situation also sheds light on a potential opportunity for community collaboration. By addressing these issues together—business leaders, local authorities, and social organizations—there is hope for developing sustainable solutions that benefit both the community and those in need.
In summary, the growing presence of street dwellers in Nadi has prompted local business owners to seek immediate action from authorities. A call for collaboration between various stakeholders could pave the way for more effective support systems for vulnerable populations in the area.
