Nadi Business Owners Take Action Amid Growing Street Life Crisis

Business owners in Nadi have expressed their frustration over the challenges posed by street dwellers and beggars congregating around their shops, leading them to take matters into their own hands. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, reported that his team has repeatedly had to clean up waste left by street residents, highlighting the increasing nuisance.

Khan emphasized that a temporary fix, where neighboring shopkeepers have banded together to tidy up the streets, is not sustainable. He suggested that the Nadi Town Council (NTC) should take the lead in addressing this issue more effectively. He proposed a collaborative meeting with police, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health, and relevant non-governmental organizations to formulate a long-term solution.

The situation has raised safety concerns, as the growing number of individuals lingering outside shops includes those who may be mentally challenged or unwilling to leave the streets. Khan noted that their presence can become confrontational, posing risks to both employees and customers.

Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, echoed the sentiment, stressing the need for the government and social welfare services to recognize the plight of these individuals and provide necessary support, including professional care.

Businessman Jerry Gounder pointed out that the NTC has limitations in handling these challenges, as they face similar issues within their own council complex, often deferring to police involvement. Administering social welfare solutions remains critical for addressing the deeper social challenges that contribute to the situation.

Salicieli Raiwalui, chairperson of the NTC, acknowledged the importance of addressing this topic. However, inquiries directed at the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, have gone unanswered.

Hoping for a more coordinated approach, there is potential for local authorities and community organizations to come together to assist vulnerable individuals more compassionately, turning a challenging situation into an opportunity for social responsibility and community support.

This situation highlights the importance of community engagement in tackling social issues, and with cooperation among various stakeholders, a solution can be found that benefits everyone involved.
