Nadi business owners are facing increasing challenges as street dwellers and beggars disrupt their operations, prompting some to take matters into their own hands. Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, shared that his staff frequently clean the shop’s entrance due to waste left overnight by individuals living on the streets.
Khan emphasized the need for a more lasting solution, urging the Nadi Town Council (NTC) to implement effective measures. He suggested that the council organize a meeting with local police, social welfare representatives, health officials, and relevant NGOs to collaboratively address this growing concern. He noted that many of these individuals either struggle with mental health issues or choose to remain on the streets.
The situation is further complicated by reports of hostility from some street dwellers when asked to leave, posing risks to both employees and customers. Khan proposed that families of these individuals should be traced and held accountable, as many are local residents with relatives who could offer support.
Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, supported the call for government intervention, advocating for professional care to be provided to those in need. Businessman Jerry Gounder pointed out that the council struggles with similar issues in their complex and believes that the responsibility lies primarily with social welfare services.
The NTC special administrator chairperson, Salicieli Raiwalui, recognized the importance of the topic and expressed willingness to address it. However, inquiries to the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, have yet to receive a response.
This ongoing dialogue emphasizes the importance of collaboration between business owners, local government, and social services to find constructive solutions for the community. While the situation remains complex, the engagement of businesses and advocacy for professional support indicate a hopeful push towards addressing the needs of both the street dwellers and the business community.
Summary: Nadi business owners contend with disturbances from street dwellers and beggars, prompting calls for the Nadi Town Council to collaborate with social services for a lasting solution. Community leaders highlight the necessity for the local government to address mental health and social welfare issues, underscoring a collective effort to improve conditions for all involved.
