Nadi Business Owners Clash with Street Dwellers: A Call for Solutions

Spread the love

Business owners in Nadi are increasingly frustrated by the presence of street dwellers and beggars, feeling compelled to take matters into their own hands as the situation disrupts their operations. According to Ashfaaq Khan, managing director of AL-Hamd Smart Living, his staff frequently clean up human waste left by individuals seeking refuge outside their shop. Khan emphasizes that while they are attempting to manage the problem on their own, a sustainable solution would require intervention from local authorities.

Khan suggests that the Nadi Town Council (NTC) should arrange a meeting with police officials, the Ministry of Social Welfare, the Ministry of Health, and relevant NGOs to collaboratively tackle the growing issue. He points out that many street dwellers pose a threat to both customers and staff, becoming hostile when asked to leave their storefronts. Khan argues that these individuals, many of whom are locals, may have families that could assist them, emphasizing the need for a system to reconnect them with their relatives.

Marc McElrath, managing director of Vuvale Restaurants, echoes Khan’s sentiments, stating that the government must step in to provide the necessary support and care to those in need. He specifically highlights the potential for care through facilities like St. Giles.

Businessman Jerry Gounder notes that the NTC is limited in its capacity to address these social challenges, often finding themselves referring issues to the police. He reinforces that the responsibility primarily falls under social welfare.

The NTC’s special administrator, Salicieli Raiwalui, acknowledges the importance of addressing this issue but does not provide specific solutions. Additionally, questions sent to Sashi Kiran, the Assistant Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, have yet to receive a response.

This article sheds light on the complex issue of homelessness and its impact on local businesses, highlighting collaboration among different sectors as a potential path forward. A community approach could pave the way for solutions that not only assist street dwellers but also create a more welcoming environment for both businesses and customers.

In a broader context, addressing such social issues can foster a sense of community and improve overall town morale. With collective effort and dialogue among the appropriate parties, there is hope for creating meaningful change in the Nadi area.
