Villagers in Nabuna, located in the Cawa district of Koro Island, are expressing cautious optimism regarding the construction of a five-star hotel on their land. While the community is welcoming the potential development for its job creation and economic benefits, there are concerns about the possible negative effects on the marine ecosystem.
Sekaia Bolabola, the district representative for Cawa, highlighted the positive impact the hotel could have on local economic activity and employment for the youth in the area. “We are looking forward to the five-star hotel that will be established here in Nabuna,” Mr. Bolabola stated, noting that the project would be owned and developed by international business investors.
Despite the enthusiasm for the development, Mr. Bolabola emphasized the importance of protecting the fragile marine ecosystem during this process. “A lot of development is coming through, however, we hope our marine ecosystem is maintained in the process,” he remarked, indicating that this issue would need further discussion.
He also mentioned that the project would provide significant job opportunities, encouraging local youth to find employment, which could help divert them from engaging in negative social behaviors. Mr. Bolabola confirmed that preparations for the hotel project are expected to begin soon, possibly within the coming weeks.
Additionally, a feasibility study has been conducted for a proposed jetty in Nabuna, which aims to improve access for business operators and local residents.
