The Education, Heritage and Arts Minister, Aseri Radrodro, has expressed concern about an unfinished building at Nabua Secondary School, highlighting potential occupational health and safety (OHS) risks. This issue has become particularly pressing following a recent fire incident at John Wesley College, prompting Radrodro to take action to prevent similar occurrences as several other schools in Fiji are facing comparable situations.
The completion of the building at Nabua Secondary School has been stalled due to a change in management. The ministry is committed to collaborating with the school board and the new management to expedite the construction process. Radrodro stated that they are actively pursuing avenues to support the new management. He encourages them to formally request assistance through the Ministry of Education to address any unfinished business promptly.
In a positive note, Radrodro assured that examinations at John Wesley College will proceed as scheduled. He received guarantees from the school’s head that the affected building, which is utilized for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, will not disrupt the examination process. Adjustments will be made to the internal examination schedule as deemed necessary after consultations with the school’s administration.
Overall, the proactive steps being taken by the ministry reflect a commitment to ensuring the safety and continued education of students in Fiji. This approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the groundwork for better management of school infrastructure in the future.
