Thirty-seven out of 85 homes designated for reconstruction under the Nabavatu Relocation Project are being prioritized, with particular attention on families currently living in tents, as stated by Isoa Talemaibua, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development. The project is being funded at approximately $5.2 million and aims to provide stable, disaster-resistant housing for those affected by Tropical Cyclone Ana in January 2021.
Talemaibua mentioned that a local contractor, originally set to construct wooden homes, has decided to build steel-framed concrete houses at the same project cost. The construction commenced earlier this year, with plans to complete the first ten homes by June to mid-July, depending on weather conditions. The goal is to have all 37 homes ready for commissioning by December.
Nadoiviri has been designated as the new permanent relocation site for the residents of Nabavatu. Minister for Rural Development, Sakiasi Ditoka, has assured that thorough tender screenings were conducted to ensure the selection of a capable contractor, emphasizing the commitment of the government to the well-being of the affected families.
This relocation project not only aims to address immediate housing needs but also to enhance overall community resilience, transitioning families into more secure living conditions after enduring the hardships of temporary shelter. As support continues from the government, the Nabavatu community looks forward to this significant step towards recovery and stability, embodying hope for a brighter future amid the challenges posed by natural disasters.
