Nabala Secondary School in the Northern Division, noted for having the only drum band in the area, has finally upgraded its musical equipment after 16 years.
The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee has donated $8,000 worth of equipment, which includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums. Principal Epi Raikivi expressed his excitement and gratitude for the 14-member band, composed of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages.
Mr. Raikivi recalled that the last drum set was donated by the Fiji Police Force in 2008, and since then, the school has been engaged in repairs and maintenance. He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu’s contributions, who has been with the band since 2012 and played a key role in obtaining the new equipment.
The band has been part of the festival’s entertainment lineup for five years and continues to support other schools and community events through their performances. Although the band’s teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was vital in securing this much-needed upgrade.
Located around 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the school band, dressed in light blue and navy uniforms, actively participates in various local events.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s ongoing commitment to community development and music education. She noted that this donation highlights their dedication to enhancing skills and supporting musical initiatives. Additionally, the festival contributed $5,000 worth of equipment last year, followed by an extra $3,000 in the latest donation as part of their commitment to the school.
