Nabala Secondary School’s Drum Band Hits the Right Note with New Equipment!

Nabala Secondary School, the sole institution with a drum band in the Northern Division, has finally received an upgrade to its music equipment after a wait of 16 years. The donation, amounting to $8,000, includes four single drums, one brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, provided by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.

Epi Raikivi, the principal of Nabala Secondary School, expressed his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, which consists of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. Mr. Raikivi mentioned that the Fiji Police Force had donated a drum set to the school back in 2008, and since then, the team has managed to repair and reuse it.

He also acknowledged Master Seru Tuidravutu, a long-time member of the band since 2012, for his significant role in seeking help from the festival committee. “The band has been part of the festival’s entertainment group for five years,” Mr. Raikivi stated. Even though the band’s teacher resigned earlier this year, his leadership was crucial in obtaining this essential equipment.

Situated about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the band, outfitted in light blue and navy blue uniforms, often performs at various schools, organizations, and community events. Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s dedication to community and music education.

“This donation highlights our commitment to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” Ms. Ibrahim remarked. She also noted that last year, the festival provided $5,000 worth of equipment and that this latest contribution of $3,000 is part of their ongoing support.
