Nabala Secondary School, the only institution in the Northern Division with a drum band, has received an upgrade to its musical equipment after 16 years. The donation, amounting to $8,000, includes four single drums, a brass drum, and a set of four tenor drums, generously provided by the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee.
Principal Epi Raikivi shared his excitement and gratitude on behalf of the 14-member band, made up of hostel students from Years Nine to 13, representing 11 villages. “In 2008, the Fiji Police Force donated their drum set to our school, and since then, we have been repairing and reusing it,” Mr. Raikivi noted.
He also recognized Master Seru Tuidravutu, who has been a part of the band since 2012 and played a key role in reaching out for support from the festival committee. “The band has participated in the festival entertainment group for five years,” he mentioned, noting that despite the teacher’s resignation earlier this year, his guidance was vital in obtaining the new equipment.
Located about 33 kilometers from Labasa Town, the school’s band, dressed in light blue and navy blue uniforms, actively supports various schools, organizations, and community events with their performances.
Zaheen Ibrahim, president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Committee, emphasized the festival’s commitment to community engagement and music education. “This donation underscores our dedication to community development, skill enhancement, and support for music education,” Ms. Ibrahim stated. She also highlighted that the festival had previously donated $5,000 worth of equipment last year and an additional $3,000 in this latest contribution as part of their long-term commitment to the community.
